Since a few days I can't send mail anymore. I always get this error: An unknown error has occurred. I still can receive mail but I can't answer them or send new mail.

WINDOWS VISTA OUTLOOK EXPRESS 0x800C006C
Go to Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and check the server numbers and fix them if they are incorrect. Try clicking the Use Defaults button there.

Steve,
The numbers are 110 for the incoming and 25 for outgoing mail. The same as in Outlook. There, in Outlook 2007 beta, I still can send mails with the same settings. This is very strange, because sending mail normally always works without problems instead of receiving mails, where you need a username and password. So, problem still remaining.

I don't know why it is saying port 0 in the error then. If you have antivirus software, try disabling it.

Even when the AntiVirus, PC-cillin Internet Security 14 is shut down, sending mails is not working.

Hi Steve
Sorry to be ignorant but I was under the impression that Outlook Express will not run with Vista?
How can I download a form of OE that runs in VISTA? I am trying to transfer to Windows Mail and having major problems
Thanks

If you go to your Sent Items folder and hightlight a message, press Ctrl+F3 and you will see that the mail program you used is:
Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16386
What you have is the "branding" in Outlook Express was also carried over. Try this:
Open the registry editor (Start/Run and type: regedit). Go to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail and look in the right hand pane for a value called "WindowTitle" and if found, right click it and select Delete. That should remove it.
Please post back with info as to whether or not this solves your problem. Good luck. -- Jim Pickering, MVP/Windows Mail applications Please reply ONLY to newsgroup.

Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped. This is the first time I've heard of that problem using Windows Mail. Hi, jra.
Yes, OE and WM are different programs. But WM inherited a lot from OE, especially in the appearance and the "look and feel".
OE showed up about 10 years ago; it was first called Microsoft Mail and News. (You may have noticed and wondered why the executable file was msimn.exe.) The program was extensively re-written for Vista and the name was changed to Windows Mail. On the surface, it looks much the same as OE, but there are many changes "under the hood", especially in the database file system.

OE will not run in Vista. I don't know how you got that impression. WinMail is OE renamed and re-tooled, but its basically the same program.

That error is almost always caused by having your antivirus program configured to scan email. See http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Stores the messages in individual files. Has some freeware spell checker. Doesn't do http mail anymore. Why would you expect a new application when OE was perfectly fine.
SMTP is not normally on port 0, it is normally 25, sometimes your ISP may make it a random number reserved ports (ie you have to ask them to know).
This OE error number is undocumented (the 0x800C006C). When there is a problem the error dialog often reports Port 0 even though the correct port is set in the Accounts dialog.
See if some malware like Nortons is interfering with your outgoung mail.
You can also record a log in Tools Options Advanced Maintenance. This will detail the conversation between OE and the SMTP server (it's mostly english).
Here is a sucessful SMTP send (the actual mail is the blank line) I connect after using secure logon (because I can use my SMTP server using any ISP - most ISP demand you connect to the mail server via the ISP's network so it knows you aren't a spammer - therefore it doesn't require a password)

If deleting email accounts and recreating them doesn't fix it, you'll need to go one step further. Delete the database and let it regenerate. Check recent posts by Steve Cochran for details on how to do this.

Good to know McAfee is the culprit in this case.
Try compacting and repairing the database using my WMUtil program (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/).
If that doesn't help then wipe out the database. Go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to another directory so that the Windows Mail directory is completely empty. Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly then you can use File | Import | Messages and choose WinMail format and point to the directory to which you moved the files.
see if that works.

You guys are looking at it all worng, it is really much simpler than that.
The problem is infact Microsoft and the fact that they doent check there updates for Vista, I lost 2 days trying to sort this problem and then realised that the only thing that was changing on the computer was the updates. Change you settings to install manually and intall one update at a time cautiously checking that you can still send mail.
To solve the problem you have now, just uninsall as many updates as you can and then start from the beginning one by one.

Here is a sucessful SMTP send (the actual mail is the blank line) I connect after using secure logon (because I can use my SMTP server using any ISP - most ISP demand you connect to the mail server via the ISP's network so it knows you aren't a spammer - therefore it doesn't require a password)
It says 220 and also returns optional features the server supports I say helo It says 250 I say Mail From It says 250 I say Receipt To It says 250 I say data It says 354 I send the actual mail message It says 250 I say Quit It says 221

"Still Learning" wrote in message I am having this problem as well. There's no rhyme or reason to it -- it's sporadic -- sometimes the email goes out and sometimes it doesn't. And NOBODY understands Windows Vista. What is /improved/ about this program -- can anybody tell me?
Edit: "Notify me of replies"

Since a few days I can't send mail anymore. I always get this error: An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C006C Who can tell me what the cause is of this error. Till now everything works fine with Outlook Express. I still can receive mail but I can't answer them or send new mail.

I went to tools/accounts/mail/properties/then advanced. I checked the box under "Delivery" that says leave messages on server. After checking that box it gave an option to check another box stating- delete items from server in deleted items folder. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

UPDATE: It allowed only certain emails to be deleted one at a time. Some continue to get "error" message, others delete fine. It appears that the spam won't go away but online stores i.e. inkjet, clothing stores etc.. will delete.

I just dealt with this problem myself. After reading a few postings on this site and others, I found that the only thing that worked was looking at the oldest email that didn't send... I found that it did send out, I even received replies, it just didn't leave my box. When I clicked on it, the preview screen read, "cannot find message" I deleted the email. (it still reads as not read in my deleted folder). I then hit "send/receive" and all was well. I didn't have to change any settings or anything. it was an easy fix for 6 hours of going without email....
